{blacksquare} Raynard S. Kington, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed deputy director of the National Institutes of Health.

Kington was previously associate director for Behavioral and Social Sciences Research and director of the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research. He has also served as acting director for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Kington replaces Ruth Kirschstein, M.D., who will become the senior adviser to NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D.
