Awards, Appointments, Announcements

  • Richard L. Schilsky, M.D., has been elected president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology for the 2008-2009 term. Schilsky is a professor of medicine and associate dean for clinical research at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
  • Edward Chu, M.D., has been appointed deputy director of the Yale Cancer Center. Prior to his promotion, Chu was a professor of medicine and pharmacology and chief of medical oncology at Yale Cancer Center.
  • Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center has been granted a three-year accreditation with commendation, the highest level of approval, from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
  • The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center was recently awarded a $9 million grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to fund the collection and storage of umbilical cord blood. The collection of cord blood, which is a rich source of stem cells for transplantation, will be focused especially on minority populations to increase the chances that minority patients on transplant waiting lists will find a match.
  • John A. Martignetti, M.D., Ph.D., and Michael Weber, Ph.D., were awarded grants from the Prostate Cancer Foundation's 2006 Competitive Awards Program. Martignetti is an associate professor in the department of genetics and genomic sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Weber is director of the University of Virginia Cancer Center.
  • Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center has joined the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an association of the world's leading cancer centers.
  • Michael V. Seiden, M.D., Ph.D., has been selected as president and CEO of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Seiden currently leads the gynecologic cancer program at Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and is chief of clinical research at Massachusetts General Hospital's division of cancer medicine.
