Awards, Appointments, Announcements

  • Charles L. Sawyers, M.D., has been named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. Sawyers is director of the human oncology and pathogenesis program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
  • Karen Weihs, M.D., medical director of the psychosocial oncology program for the Arizona Cancer Center and professor of psychiatry for the University of Arizona College of Medicine, has been awarded the 2008 American Psychosocial Oncology Program Award for Outstanding Clinical Care.
  • Stephen Frye, Ph.D., former head of discovery medicinal chemistry at GlaxoSmithKline, has been chosen to lead the new Center for Integrative Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
  • John Sampson, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of surgery in the division of neurosurgery at Duke University Medical Center and associate deputy director of the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, is the second recipient of the Tug McGraw Researcher of the Year Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in the area of brain tumor research.
  • Isaiah J. Fidler, D.V.M., Ph.D., professor and chair of University of Texas M. D. Anderson's department of cancer biology, and Jack Roth, M.D., professor in the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
  • David Abrams, Ph.D., director of the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research in the Office of the Director of the National Institutes of Health, will receive the 2008 Joseph W. Cullen Memorial Award for the American Society of Preventive Oncology for his work in tobacco research.
  • Beth Y. Karlan, M.D., director of the Cedars-Sinai Women's Cancer Research Institute, has been named the new editor-in-chief of Gynecologic Oncology, the journal of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.
