Awards, Appointments, Announcements

  • Tabaré Vázquez, M.D., president of Uruguay and a radiation oncologist by training, gave a special guest lecture at the annual meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology held October 28 to November 1 in Los Angeles.
  • The Institute of Medicine has elected 65 new members. Among them are Ellen R. Gritz, Ph.D., chair of the department of behavioral science at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; Michael L. Callaham, M.D., professor of clinical medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and chief of the division of emergency medicine at UCSF Medical Center; and Louis J. Ptácek, M.D., a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and professor of neurology at UCSF.
  • The American Association for Cancer Research announced the four recipients of the 2007 Jeannik M. Littlefield-AACR Grants for Metastatic Colon Cancer Research. The grantees are: Michael Kahn, Ph.D., University of Southern California; Michael Karin, Ph.D., University of California, San Diego; Louis Weiner, M.D., Fox Chase Cancer Center; and Makoto Mark Taketo, M.D., Ph.D., Kyoto University.
  • AACR announced the recipients of the 2007 Breast Cancer Research Foundation-AACR Grants in Translational Breast Cancer Research. The recipients are: Ingrid A. Mayer, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center; Alana Welm, Ph.D., assistant professor of oncological sciences at the Huntsman Cancer Institute; and Douglas Yee, M.D., cancer center director and professor at the University of Minnesota.
  • Georgetown University Medical Center and Georgetown University Hospital announced the appointment of Louis M. Weiner, M.D., as director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, effective January 2008. Dr. Weiner is a medical oncologist specializing in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers.
  • Joe Gray, Ph.D., director of the life sciences division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, received an Innovator Award from the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program.
  • Candace S. Johnson, Ph.D., has been appointed chair of the department of pharmacology and therapeutics at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. She has been a senior faculty member in the department and senior vice president of translational research since 2002.
