Awards, Appointments, Announcements

  • Joan Massagué, Ph.D., was awarded the 2007 Passano Award by the Passano Foundation for his research on transforming growth factor-beta signaling. Massagué is the chair of the cancer biology and genetics program at the Sloan-Kettering Institute.
  • Derek Hopko, Ph.D., and his colleagues received a grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure to study methods for treating depression in breast cancer patients. Hopko is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
  • The American Association for Cancer Research awarded several public service awards at their 2007 annual meeting. Nancy Brinker and Lance Armstrong received the AACR Centennial Medals for Distinguished Public Service for their contributions to cancer research advocacy. Brinker is the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Armstrong founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., former director of the National Cancer Institute, was awarded the AACR Distinguished Service Award. Harold P. Freeman, M.D., and LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., M.D., received the AACR Public Service Award. Freeman is the founder and president of the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care, and Leffall is the Charles R. Drew professor at the Howard University College of Medicine.
  • Christine Ambrosone, Ph.D., was awarded the Thomas B. Tomasi Achievement Award from the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation. Ambrosone is the chair of the department of cancer prevention and control at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
  • The Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania has recently launched the new Center for Research on Early Detection and Cure of Ovarian Cancer. George Coukos, M.D., Ph.D., will serve as director of the center.
  • Michael R. Harbut, M.D., was the recipient of the Irving Selikoff Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization. Harbut is the co-director of the National Center for Vermiculite and Asbestos-Related Cancers at Karmanos Cancer Institute.
