Awards, Appointments, Announcements

{blacksquare} Joseph Fraumeni, M.D., of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., George Klein, M.D., D.Sc., of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and Ketayun Dinshaw, M.D., of the Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, India, were awarded the International Agency for Research on Cancer's Medal of Honour for 2006.

{blacksquare} Manel Esteller, Ph.D., was awarded the Carcinogenesis Young Investigator Award for his research in epigenetics and tumor suppressor genes. Esteller is the group leader of the CNIO Cancer Epigenetics Group's molecular pathology program.

{blacksquare} V. Craig Jordan, Ph.D., D.Sc., O.B.E., was awarded the ASCO American Cancer Society Award and Lecture. Jordan is chair of cancer research at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

{blacksquare} Eden Stotsky was awarded the American Cancer Society's Lane Adams Quality of Life Award. Stotsky works at the Johns Hopkins Colon Cancer Center in Baltimore.

{blacksquare} John F. Dicello, Ph.D., was appointed professor emeritus in the Johns Hopkins University department of radiation oncology and molecular radiation sciences. Dicello studies the effects of radiation on cancer growth and on astronauts.

{blacksquare} Peter Scardino, M.D., was appointed chairman of the surgery department at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Scardino has served as the head of the urology department at Sloan-Kettering since 1999.

{blacksquare} Anirban Maitra, M.D., of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, was awarded the Maryland Science Center's 2006 Outstanding Young Scientist Award. Maitra's laboratory develops therapies for treating pancreatic cancer.

{blacksquare} The American Association for Cancer Research announced winners for the first Jeannik M. Littlefield-AACR Grants in Metastatic Colon Cancer Research. Winners include: Peter Carmeliet, M.D., Ph.D., of Flanders Interuniversity Institute for Biotechnology in Belgium, Steven A. Curley, M.D., of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Wafik El-Deiry, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Edgar G. Engelman, M.D., of Stanford University in Calif., Douglas V. Faller M.D., Ph.D., of Boston University School of Medicine, Robert D. Ladner, Ph.D., of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Eric Lagasse, Ph.D., Pharm.D., of the University of Pittsburgh in Penn., Nouri Neamati, Ph.D., of the University of California in Los Angeles, Boris C. Pasche, M.D., Ph.D., of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., Gary K. Schwartz, M.D., of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and Oliver Stoeltzing, M.D., of Universitaet Regensburg in Germany.
