Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Paul Seligman, M.D., was appointed associate center director for safety policy and communication in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the FDA. Seligman joined the FDA in 2001.
A. Oliver Sartor, M.D., has joined the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Lank Center for Genitourinary Oncology. Sartor is associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and previously worked at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
Arthur Riggs, Ph.D., was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Riggs has helped develop many cancer therapies, including Herceptin, Avastin, and Rituxan. He currently serves as the director of the Beckman Research Institute at the City of Hope in Duarte, Calif.
Susan Band Horwitz, Ph.D., was given the 29th annual Bristol-Myers Squibb "Freedom to Discover" Award for distinguished achievement in cancer research. Horwitz currently works at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York.
Andrew Quong, Ph.D., was appointed associate professor of cancer biology at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa. Quong previously worked as associate professor of physics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Gary K. Schwartz, M.D., was named chief of the melanoma and sarcoma service in the division of solid tumor oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Schwartz has worked for the center for 16 years.
Joan Massagué, Ph.D., was awarded the inaugural Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Research. Massagué is the chairman of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's cancer biology and genetics program.
Helen K. Chew, M.D., was presented the 2006 Joyce Raley Teel Award for outstanding dedication to the cause of breast cancer. Chew currently works as an assistant professor at the University of California in Davis Cancer Center.
