Walter J. Curran Jr., M.D., clinical director of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, was reelected for a third term as chairman of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group at the group's semiannual meeting in January.
Alberto Costa, M.D., head of the Breast Unit of the Maugeri Foundation in Pavia, Italy, has been appointed coordinator of the Breast Unit of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. Costa will be responsible for organizing breast cancer management in the state according to European Society of Mastology (EUSOMA) guidelines and establishing a permanent breast unit in Ticino by 2006. Costa is also director of the European School of Oncology in Milan.
Lajos P. Balogh, Ph.D., has been appointed director of nanotechnology research in the Department of Radiation Medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo. Balogh was previously at the University of Michigan.
Daniela S. Gerhard, Ph.D., has been named director of the National Cancer Institute's Office of Cancer Genomics. Gerhard joined NCI in 2002 and has been acting director of the OCG since mid-2003.
The National Cancer Institute has announced several changes to its senior staff.
Karen H. Antman, M.D., deputy director for translational and clinical sciences, has accepted the position of provost of the Boston University Medical Campus and dean of the School of Medicine.
J. Carl Barrett, Ph.D., director of the NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR), has taken a position with the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research as global head of oncology biomarkers. Robert Wiltrout, Ph.D., the center's principal deputy director, will become the new director.
Lee Helman, M.D., has been named acting scientific director for clinical research in CCR. Helman is a deputy director in CCR and chief of its Pediatric Oncology Branch.
Craig Reynolds, Ph.D., has been named operational head of NCI-Frederick.
Lance Liotta, M.D., Ph.D., and Emmanuel Petricoin III, M.D., co-directors of the National Cancer Institute/U.S. Food and Drug Administration Clinical Proteomics Program, have announced that they will be moving to the Life Sciences Division of the College of Arts and Sciences at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Liotta was the Chief of the Laboratory of Pathology at NCI's Center for Cancer Research, and Petricoin was a senior investigator in the FDA's Office of Cell Tissue and Gene Therapies in the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.
