Awards, Appointments, Announcements
The King Faisal International Prize for Medicine has been awarded to Sir Richard Doll, Ph.D., of Cancer Research U.K., and Sir Richard Peto, F.R.S., of the University of Oxford in England. The prize, awarded annually by the King Faisal Foundation in Saudi Arabia, recognizes the pair for "their pioneering and profoundly valuable epidemiological research that has unequivocally established the link between tobacco and various diseases, such as vascular diseases and cancer."
The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa, Fla., has made several new appointments.
W. Michael Alberts, M.D., chief medical officer, has been named medical director of the Moffitt's Affiliate Program. He replaces Karen Fields, M.D., who left to become president and chief executive officer of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio.
Scott Antonia, M.D., Ph.D., has been named clinical immunotherapy director with translational research. Antonia is a medical oncologist in the Thoracic Oncology Program.
Marc C. Chamberlain, M.D., has joined the Neuro-Oncology Program.
Catherine Chodkiewicz, M.D., has joined the Gastrointestinal Tumor Program as a medical oncologist.
Alessio Pigazzi, M.D., Ph.D., Jeannie Shen, M.D., and Vijay Trisal, M.D., have been named clinical assistant professors in the Department of Oncologic Surgery at the City of Hope Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif.
M. Peter Lance, M.D., and María Elena Martínez, Ph.D., have been named co-directors of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson.
Mitchell I. Edelson, M.D., has been named chief of the gynecologic oncology section in the Department of Surgical Oncology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
Barbara Rimer, Dr.P.H., has been appointed dean of the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, effective June 1. Before joining UNC in 2003, Rimer was the director of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the National Cancer Institute.
David H. Hussey, M.D., has been elected president of the Radiological Society of North America for 2005. Hussey is a clinical professor in the department of radiation oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
