Awards, Appointments, Announcements

{blacksquare} The American Society of Clinical Oncology has announced the recipients of its 2005 Special Awards, which will be presented at ASCO's annual meeting in May.

Charles L. Sawyers, M.D., of Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the University of California, Los Angeles, will receive the 2005 David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award and Lecture. He is being honored for his research on signal transduction in leukemia and prostate cancer.

Harold Varmus, M.D., president and chief executive officer of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, will receive the first Science of Oncology Award and Lecture.

Barbara Weber, M.D., of the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center in Philadelphia, is the recipient of the 2005 American Cancer Society Award and Lecture.

Richard O'Reilly, M.D., of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, will receive the Pediatric Oncology Lecture-ship Award.

John Minna, M.D., of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, will receive the Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement.

Sharon B. Murphy, M.D., of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Leadership.

Ron E. Beller, Ph.D., chief operating officer for ASCO, will receive the Special Recognition Award.

The Public Service Award will be presented to Joseph S. Bailes, M.D., for his years of work advocating for better cancer care policies and legislation on behalf of ASCO.

The Partners in Progress Award will be given to Carolyn Aldigé, president and founder of the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation.

{blacksquare} Nominations are being sought for the Paul Marks Prizes for Cancer Research. The prizes recognize young investigators who have contributed to the understanding of cancer or improved the treatment of the disease through basic or clinical research. Nominees must be aged 45 or younger at the time of the submission deadline, April 29. Up to three investigators will share the cash award of $150,000. The awards are named for Paul Marks, M.D., president emeritus of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
