Awards, Appointments, Announcements

{blacksquare}David S. Alberts, M.D., has been named director of the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson. Alberts is regents professor of medicine, pharmacology, nutritional science, and public health at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and director of the cancer center's Cancer Prevention and Control Program.

{blacksquare}Scott Powers has joined Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York as an associate professor and director of the Human Cancer Genome Center in Woodbury. Powers was previously at Tularik Inc.'s Genomics Division.

{blacksquare}Three physicians have joined the staff of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.: Marina George, M.D., in the Department of Medicine; Annette Sunga, M.D., in the Departments of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences, and Medicine; and Valerie C. Rigual, M.D., in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.

{blacksquare}M. Blair Marshall, M.D., has been appointed chief of thoracic surgery at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Marshall, an expert in chest wall reconstruction, was previously a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

{blacksquare}Sanford H. Barsky, M.D., has been named professor and Senhauser Chair in the Department of Pathology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health in Columbus. Barsky, an expert in the molecular biology of inflammatory breast cancer and the mechanisms of metastasis of other cancers, was previously at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine and the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

{blacksquare}Edward Snyder, M.D., has been appointed associate director for shared resources at the Yale Cancer Center in New Haven, Conn. Snyder is professor of laboratory medicine at the Yale School of Medicine and serves as director of the Blood Bank/Apheresis Service at Yale-New Haven Hospital and director of the Richard Frisbee Hematopoietic Cell Processing Laboratory at Yale Medical Center.

{blacksquare}Franziska Grieder, D.V.M., Ph.D., has been appointed associate director of comparative medicine at the National Center for Research Resources, a part of the National Institutes of Health. Grieder has managed the Division of Comparative Medicine's Laboratory Animal Sciences Program since 2000.

{blacksquare}Steven I. Sherman, M.D., has been named chair of the Department of Endocrine Neoplasia and hormonal disorders at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Sherman has been a member of the faculty at M. D. Anderson since 1993.
