Awards, Appointments, Announcements

{blacksquare} Ellen R. Gritz, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Behavioral Science at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, was honored with the Olla S. Stribling Distinguished Chair for Cancer Research, a 7-year appointment.

The chair was established in 1980 to support cancer research and redesignated as a distinguished chair in 1997. Gritz joined M. D. Anderson in 1993.

{blacksquare} The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has named Gerald J. Dal Pan, M.D., as director of the agency's Office of Drug Safety. He will oversee a program that aims to ensure the safe and appropriate use of medications. Dal Pan has been director of the Office of Drug Safety's Division of Surveillance, Research, and Communication Support since 2003.

{blacksquare} Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York recently announced several appointments and awards.

Laura Liberman, M.D., a radiologist in the Breast Imaging Section of the Department of Radiology, has been named Women Faculty Affairs Program Director in the office of the president at the cancer center.

David S. Klimstra, M.D., was named chief of the Surgical Pathology Service in the Department of Pathology.

Michael S. Glickman, M.D., an infectious disease specialist who is head of the Laboratory of Microbial Pathogenesis, received the 2005 Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Award from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

Arti Hurria, M.D., of the Breast Cancer Medicine Service, was named a T. Franklin Williams Scholar by the Association of Subspecialty Professors.

Malcolm A. S. Moore, D.Phil., head of the Developmental Hematopoiesis Laboratory, was the 2005 Donald Metcalf Lecture and Award recipient.

Pier Paolo Pandolfi, M.D., Ph.D., of the Cancer Biology and Genetics Program, received the American Italian Cancer Foundation Prize for Scientific Excellence in Medicine for his research on acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Carol Rossetto received the 2005 Jean Fergusson Excellence in Pediatric Oncology Nursing Practice Award from the Association of Pediatric Oncology Nurses.
