Awards, Appointments, Announcements

{blacksquare} John Kirkwood, M.D., was honored by the Melanoma Research Foundation with the 2005 Wings of Hope award.

Kirkwood is the director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute's melanoma program. The award recognizes individuals or companies who have made a substantial contribution to melanoma patients and their families or health care science as it relates to the field of melanoma.

Kirkwood also recently received the European Award for Interferon and Cytokine Research from the European Society of Cytokine Research.

{blacksquare} The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) recently honored Dario Alessi, Ph.D., with its Gold Medal.

Alessi, of the Medical Research Council Phosphorylation Unit at the University of Dundee, Scotland, received the award in recognition of his work on kinases and their role in inherited disease.

The EMBO Gold Medal is presented annually to a young European researcher for outstanding contributions to life science research.

{blacksquare} Anita Roberts, Ph.D., and Michael Sporn, M.D., have been awarded the 2005 Susan G. Komen Foundation Brinker Award for Distinguished Science in the area of basic research for their joint research on the cytokine transforming growth factor beta (TGF-{beta}).

Roberts joined the National Cancer Institute in 1976 and served as chief of the Laboratory of Cell Regulation and Carcinogenesis from 1995 to 2004. Sporn was chief of the Laboratory of Chemoprevention at NCI for more than 30 years and now is the Oscar M. Cohn Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology and of Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School.

The Brinker awardees will receive a $20,000 honorarium and a citation at the 28th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

{blacksquare} Khurshid A. Guru, M.D., has been appointed director of the Robotic Surgery Center at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. Guru will also serve as assistant professor in the Department of Urologic Oncology.

{blacksquare} The Southwest Oncology Group recently recognized four of its young physician–researchers for their successful completion of the group's Young Investigators Training Course.

The investigators are Cathy Eng, M.D., assistant professor of gastrointestinal medical oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston; Rami Komrokji, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; Melanie R. Palomares, M.D., assistant professor of medical oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, Calif.; and John Strother, M.D., fellow of hematology and medical oncology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

The four young investigators were chosen through a competitive process that involved submitting a concept for a clinical trial they hope to develop through the group.

{blacksquare} The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix, Ariz., named MaryAnn Guerra as chief operating officer. Guerra joined TGen in 2004 and was previously TGen's senior vice president of operations. From 1994 to 2001, she was deputy director for management at the National Cancer Institute.
