Awards, Appointments, Announcements
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the
National Institutes of Health, has named Elaine A. Ostrander, Ph.D.,
the new chief of its Genetics Branch, one of the seven research branches in
the Division of Intramural Research. Ostrander comes to NHGRI from the Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Brian P. Sorrentino, M.D., director of the Experimental
Hematology Division at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis,
Tenn., has won the 2005 International Society of Experimental Hematology
McCulloch and Till Lectureship and Award, which was established to recognize
the contributions of younger researchers in the field.
V. Craig Jordan, Ph.D., D.Sc., and Monica Morrow, M.D.,
have moved from Northwestern University in Chicago to the Fox Chase Cancer
Research Center in Philadelphia. In January 2005, Jordan became vice president
and scientific director of the Medical Science Division and the Alfred G.
Knudson Jr. Chair in Cancer Research at Fox Chase. Morrow is the new chairman
of surgical oncology and the G. Willing "Wing" Pepper Chair in
Cancer Research.
Cynthia D. Myers, Ph.D., has been named director of the
Integrative Medicine Program at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer & Research
Institute in Tampa, Fla. Myers was previously at the University of California
at Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine.
Ermelinda Bonaccio, M.D., has been appointed director of
mammography in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at Roswell Park Cancer
Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. Bonaccio was previously at the Elizabeth Wende
Breast Clinic in Rochester, N.Y.
Cindy A. Eller, Vice President for Development of the Roswell
Park Alliance Foundation, has been elected president of the National
Association of Cancer Center Development Officers (NACCDO), an organization
that works on national collaborative fundraising efforts to support cancer
research.
Other newly elected NACCDO officers include: Robert Wilkens, Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard G. Solove Research Institute at Ohio State University, vice chair; Lisa Considine, University of California, San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Center, secretary; and Sandi Weckesser, Fox Chase Cancer Center, treasurer.
Mary J. C. Hendrix, Ph.D., professor of pediatrics and
scientific director of the Children's Memorial Research Center at the Robert
H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University in Chicago,
has received the Australian Society for Medical Re-search Medal. The award
recognized Hendrix's advocacy for biomedical research and scientific
accomplishments in cancer biology.
Eric Horwitz, M.D., has been appointed clinical director of
the department of radiation oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in
Philadelphia.
