Correction

A news story in the August 3 issue ("New Drugs Target Hypoxia Response in Tumors," Vol. 97, No. 15, p. 1112) incorrectly attributed the first identification of the HIF-1 transcription factor. Gregg Semenza, M.D., Ph.D., of Johns Hopkins Medical School, and his laboratory discovered HIF-1 in 1992. The laboratories of Semenza, Peter Ratcliffe, M.D., and Jaime Caro, M.D., each reported the identification of the hypoxia response element on the EPO gene in 1991.
