Awards, Appointments, Announcements

{blacksquare} The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology has announced its 2005 Gold Medal winners. C. Norman Coleman, M.D., director of the Radiation Oncology Sciences Program and associate director of the Radiation Research Program at the National Cancer Institute, and Allen S. Lichter, M.D., dean of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, will receive their awards at ASTRO's annual meeting in October.

{blacksquare} Fourteen medical professionals will be honored with the American Cancer Society Lane Adams Quality of Life Award, which recognizes individuals who have made a difference through innovation, leadership, and consistent excellence in providing compassionate, skilled care and counsel to persons living with cancer and their families: Ray Bell, Road to Recovery, Franklin, Tenn.; Constantino Benedetti, M.D., Ohio State University Medical Center, Arthur G. {blacksquare} Three researchers have been recognized by the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation for their contributions to cancer research.

Angela M. Brodie, Ph.D., professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, received the Charles F. Kettering Prize for pioneering the development of aromatase inhibitors, a class of drugs now widely used for the treatment of breast cancer.

Gerald N. Wogan, Ph.D., professor emeritus of the Departments of Chemistry and Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, was awarded the Charles S. Mott Prize for his studies related to aflatoxin—a mold, food contaminant, and human carcinogen that works with the hepatitis virus to cause liver cancer.

Roger D. Kornberg, Ph.D., Winzer Professor of Medicine at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., received the Alfred P. Sloan Jr. Prize for his contributions in discovering the inner workings of RNA.

{blacksquare} Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York has announced several appointments.

Pier Paolo Pandolfi, M.D., Ph.D., head of the Molecular and Developmental Biology Laboratory, has been named the first incumbent of the Albert C. Foster Chair.

Gavril W. Pasternak, M.D., Ph.D., head of the Molecular Neuropharmacology Laboratory, has been named to the Anne Burnett Tandy Chair of Neurology.

John H. J. Petrini, Ph.D., is the incumbent of the Paul A. Marks Chair in Molecular Cell Biology.
