Frank C. Detterbeck, M.D., has been named associate director for clinical affairs jointly by the Yale Cancer Center, the Yale-New Haven Hospital, and the Yale Medical Group in New Haven, Conn.
The Society of Surgical Oncology has announced the winners of its recent election:
Timothy J. Eberlein, M.D., of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named President. He succeeds S. Eva Singletary, M.D.
Other newly elected members of the executive council include Raphael E. Pollock, M.D., Ph.D., University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, president-elect; Nicholas J. Petrelli, M.D., Helen F. Graham Cancer Center at Christiana Care, Newark, Del., vice president; V. Suzanne Klimberg, M.D., University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, council member; Scott H. Kurtzman, M.D., University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, council member; and Kelly McMasters, M.D., Ph.D., University of Louisville, Kentucky, councillor-at-large.
Paulette S. Gray, Ph.D., has been named director of the Division of Extramural Activities at the National Cancer Institute. Gray has served as acting director and deputy director of the division since 2003 and as deputy director since 1997.
Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y., has made several appointments:
Paulette Mhawech-Faucegila, M.D., has joined the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She was previously on the faculty of the Geneva University Hospitals in Chicago.
Michael Schiff, M.D., joined the Department of Medicine from the University of Florida Health Science Center.
Giuseppe Sconocchia, M.D., has been appointed to the Department of Immunology. He was previously at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) presented its 2005 Special Awards at the organization's annual meeting in May.
Charles L. Sawyers, M.D., received the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award, ASCO's highest scientific award. Sawyers is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, and director of the Prostate Cancer Program Area at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Harold Varmus, M.D., president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, was honored with a new award, the Science of Oncology Award and Lecture. This award was designed to recognize outstanding individual contributions to basic or translational cancer research.
Barbara Weber, M.D., received the American Cancer Society Award, which recognizes an individual's contributions to the prevention and control of cancer. Weber is professor of medicine and genetics at the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center in Philadelphia and vice president of translational medicine and genetics for GlaxoSmithKline.
Richard O'Reilly, M.D., chair of the Pediatrics Department and chief of the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, was awarded the Pediatric Oncology Award and Lecture.
John D. Minna, M.D., was honored with the Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement, which honors the career and achievements of an individual whose research and innovations have had a transforming and lasting impact on the treatment of cancer. Minna is director of the Hamon Center for Therapeutic Oncology Research and professor of internal medicine and pharmacology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
Sharon B. Murphy, M.D., received the Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Leadership in recognition of her contributions to oncology research, specifically her clinical research in pediatric oncology. Murphy is professor of pediatrics and director of the Children's Cancer Research Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Carolyn "Bo" Aldigé, president and founder of the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation, received the Partners in Progress Award in recognition of her activities in the field of patient advocacy.
Joseph S. Bailes, M.D., of Texas Oncology, was awarded the Public Service Award in recognition of his contributions to contemporary policy issues in oncology and for his work advocating on behalf of ASCO for better cancer care policies and legislation.
Ron E. Beller, Ph.D., vice president and chief operating officer for ASCO, received a Special Appreciation Award for the role he played in the society's growth over the last decade.
Piotr Grodzinski, Ph.D., has joined the National Cancer Institute as program director for cancer nanotechnology in the Office of Technology and Industrial Relations.
Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia has announced the establishment of the Gerald E. Hanks Endowed Chair in Radiation Oncology. Alan Pollack, M.D., Ph.D., who succeeded Hanks as chairman of radiation oncology, has been named the first holder of the Hanks Chair.
Jimmie C. Holland, M.D., received the Claude Jacquillat Award for achievement in clinical oncology, which honors outstanding contributions to cancer patient care, at the Congress on Anticancer Chemotherapy in Paris. Holland is the Wayne E. Chapman Chair in Psychiatric Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, both in New York.
