Awards, Appointments, Announcements

{blacksquare} A new chair and five new members have been named to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which is sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Bruce Nedrow (Ned) Calonge, M.D., a member of the Task Force for 2 years, is the newly appointed chair. He will take over from Alfred O. Berg, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, who has been the chair since 1996. Berg will remain on the task force.

The five new members are Leon Gordis, M.D., Dr. P.H., professor in the departments of Epidemiology and Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore; Kimberly Gregory, M.D., director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and director of Women’s Health Services Research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles; Judith Ockene, Ph.D., professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School; Diana Petitti, M.D., director of research and evaluation at Kaiser Permanente of Southern California in Pasadena; and Barbara Yawn, M.D., director of research at Olmsted Medical Center in Rochester, Minn.

{blacksquare} The American Society of Clinical Oncology has announced the recipients of its 2004 Special Awards, given annually to leaders in the oncology community who have made contributions to enhancing the quality of cancer care.

ASCO Past President Larry Norton, M.D., is the recipient of the 2004 David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award and Lecture. Dr. Norton is the recently appointed deputy physician-in-chief for Breast Cancer Programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York.

Bernard Levin, M.D., of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, is the recipient of the 2004 American Cancer Society Award and Lecture.

The Pediatric Oncology Lectureship Award will be presented at this year’s annual meeting to A. Thomas Look, M.D., of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Also receiving awards for their outstanding contributions to the field are Lawrence Einhorn, M.D., of Indiana University, Indiana Cancer Pavilion, Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement; Robert Young, M.D., of Fox Chase Cancer Center, Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Leadership; and Margaret Foti, Ph.D., American Association for Cancer Research, Special Recognition Award.
