Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Constantino
Benedetti, M.D., director of the cancer pain and
palliative medicine program at the Ohio State University Arthur G. James
Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute in Columbus, has
received the St. George Medal from the American Cancer Society. The medal is
reserved for volunteers who have served the organization for at least 6 years
and who have provided distinguished service in helping it achieve its
strategic and mission-driven goals.

Two physicians have been appointed to the Department of Medicine at
Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.: Nikolaos Almyroudis,
M.D., has joined the Division of Infectious Diseases, and Renuka V.
Iyer, M.D., has joined the Division of Gastrointestinal and Thoracic
Oncology.
The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa,
Fla., has made three new appointments:
Wade Sexton, M.D., has joined the Genitourinary Oncology Program. Sexton previously served as the director of urologic oncology at Wilford Hall Medical Center at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Jeffrey Lancet, M.D., has joined the Hematologic Malignancies Program. Lancet was previously at the University of Rochester, Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Gregory Springett, M.D., Ph.D., joined the Gastrointestinal Tumor Program.
The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa,
Fla., has announced the addition of five new affiliate members: Ricardo H.
Crisostomo, M.D., San Juan City Hospital, Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico; and
Patti A. Dolan, M.D., Richard A. Knipe, M.D., Joseph R. Mace, M.D., and
John Andrew Peterson, M.D., of Gulfcoast Oncology Associates, St.
Petersburg, Fla.
Joe William Ramos, Ph.D., has joined the Cancer Research
Center of Hawaii in Honolulu as a researcher in the Natural Products Program.
Ramos previously served as an assistant professor at Rutgers University.
Scott Hawley, Ph.D., investigator at the Stowers Institute
for Medical Research in Kansas City, Mo., has been named an American Cancer
Society research professor. This designation carries an award of $300,000 over
5 years.
Hawley's laboratory investigates the mechanisms by which cells transmit genetic information during mitosis and meiosis. In addition to his work at the Stowers Institute, Hawley is a professor of molecular biosciences at the University of Kansas at Lawrence.
David A.
Schwartz, M.D., has been appointed director of the
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National
Toxicology Program. Schwartz is currently director of the Pulmonary, Allergy,
and Critical Care Division and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of
Medicine at Duke University. He will join the National Institutes of Health in
April 2005.

Fran Balkwill, Ph.D., professor of cancer biology at the
Barts and The London, Queen Mary's Medical School, was awarded the 2004 Award
for Communication in the Life Sciences from the European Molecular Biology
Organization (EMBO).
Balkwill received the award for her contribution to science communication for children. The cancer researcher has authored 13 children's books that look at a range of topics from genetics to HIV and AIDS.
She is also director of the Cancer Research U.K. Translational Oncology Centre at Queen Mary and the director of the Centre of the Cell, an interactive bioscience center in London.
