Ten cancer researchers have been elected to the Institute of
Medicine of the National Academies: Alan H. DeCherney, M.D., University
of California at Los Angeles; Ronald A. DePinho, M.D., Dana-Farber
Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, Boston; Robert J. Desnick,
M.D., Ph.D., Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York; Timothy J.
Eberlein, M.D., Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis;
Tony Hunter, Ph.D., Salk Institute, La Jolla, Calif.; Kenneth
Kaushansky, M.D., University of California at San Diego; Edward R.
Laws, M.D., University of Virginia at Charlottesville; John D.
McConnell, M.D., University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at
Dallas; Michael W. Mulholland, M.D., Ph.D., University of Michigan in
Ann Arbor; and Charles J. Sherr, M.D., Ph.D., St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
Margaret R. Spitz, M.D., chair of the Department of
Epidemiology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in
Houston, has been appointed the Olga Keith Weiss Distinguished University
Chair for Cancer Research, which carries a $2.3 million endowment. Spitz is
the first woman in the University of Texas System to be honored with a
distinguished university chair.
Linda Ferris, Ph.D., has been named executive director of the
Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute in Annapolis, Md., which is part
of the Anne Arundel Medical Center.
David Brown, M.D., has been named distinguished professor and
chair of anesthesiology and pain medicine at the University of Texas M. D.
Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Brown was previously at the University of
Iowa College of Medicine.
Two Ohio State University researchers have received Hero of Hope
awards from the Ohio Division of the American Cancer Society.
Michael Caligiuri, M.D., director of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, received the John Peter Minton, M.D., Hero of Hope Research Champion Medal of Honor in recognition of his outstanding contribution in championing the cause of cancer research.
Barbara Andersen, Ph.D., a professor of psychology and obstetrics and gynecology and a member of the university's James Cancer Control Program, received the John Peter Minton, M.D., Hero of Hope Research Medal of Honor for her work in understanding the psychosocial aspects of cancer diagnosis and recovery.
