Sharon R. Dent, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, received the Julie and Ben Rogers Award for Excellence for her outstanding accomplishments and international reputation for excellence in basic research. The award includes a certificate of merit and a $10,000 cash award.
Christopher G. Willett, M.D., has been named chair of the department of radiation oncology at Duke University Medical Center. He currently serves as clinical director of radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and is professor of radiation oncology at Harvard Medical School. He will assume his new duties March 1.
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital awarded its Pollin Prize for Pediatric Research to four cancer researchers for their contribution to the treatment of pediatric leukemia. The recipients were Emil Frei, M.D., physician-in-chief emeritus at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston; Emil J. Freireich, M.D., professor of medicine and laboratory medicine and director of the Adult Leukemia Research Program at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston; Donald Pinkel, M.D., adjunct professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo and clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California; and James F. Holland, M.D., distinguished professor of neoplastic diseases at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
Martin Rosman, M.D., has been appointed director of breast research for the Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute at the Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Md.
Rosman served for 28 years as the senior attending physician at Bridgeport Hospital and chief of its Section of Oncology for 16 years. He also served as a consultant to Milford Hospital and as vice president of the Connecticut Oncology Association.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society honored five researchers with its Stohlman Scholar Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement of blood cancer research. The awards were announced at the Society’s Annual Leadership Conference in Cleveland. The recipients were Alan Friedman, M.D., associate professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore; Warren Pear, M.D., D.Sc., associate professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Pennsylvania; Edward Scott, Ph.D., director of the Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Program at the University of Florida Shands Cancer Center and College of Medicine; Richard Van Etten, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine and director of hematologic malignancies at the Molecular Oncology Research Institute at Tufts-New England Medical Center; and Dong-Er Zhang, Ph.D., associate professor at the Scripps Research Institute.
