CORRESPONDENCE

Erratum

Erratum: "Evaluation of the American Stop Smoking Intervention Study (ASSIST): A Report of Outcomes" by Stillman et al. [J Natl Cancer Inst 2003;95:1681–91 (Issue 22)]. Because of an oversight, the number of fewer smokers cited was incorrect. The number of "278 700" fewer smokers cited in the Abstract conclusions on p. 1681 and in the Discussion final paragraph on page 1689 should be "1 213 000." Likewise the 95% CI also on page 1689 should be changed from "(95% CI = –54 000 to 611 500) fewer smokers nationally" to "(95% CI = –235 200 to 2 661 300) fewer smokers nationally."

Related to this calculation is a correction in the "Statistical Analysis" section—The last sentence under "Smoking prevalence analysis" should have read "An estimate of the reduction in the number of smokers if ASSIST had been implemented nationwide was obtained by multiplying the total population 18 years of age or older at baseline (192 322 966, Census Bureau 1993 http://eire.census.gov/popest/data/national/tables/intercensal/US-EST90INT-04.php) by the adjusted difference in smoking prevalence between the ASSIST and non-ASSIST states."

The corrected estimate is more consistent than the original, incorrect estimate with the conclusion of our article. The authors regret the error.
