Awards, Appointments, Announcements

  • The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) has announced the winners of two awards, which will be presented at the society's annual meeting in October.
    Philip P. Connell, M.D., of the University of Chicago, will receive the Junior Faculty Research Award.
    Matthew T. Carpenter, M.D., of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; Christopher D. Jahraus, M.D., of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington; and
    Emma Elizabeth Thomas, M.D., Ch.B., of the Cookridge Hospital in the United Kingdom, will receive the Resident Clinical/Basic Science Research Award.
  • Rochelle L. Krowinski, R.N., C.H.E., has been appointed executive director of regional network development at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. Krowinski was previously at the Regional Cancer Center in Erie, Pa., where she served as chief executive officer.
  • The National Foundation for Cancer Research has awarded its highest distinction to Curt Civin, M.D., the Herman and Walter Samuelson Professor of Oncology and co-director of immunology and hematopoiesis at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, for his pioneering stem cell research. The award includes at $250,000, 5-year grant to support his research on how stem cells function to help improve bone marrow transplants for cancer patients.
  • Richard A. Gross, M.D., has been named leader of the new Internal and Hospital Medicine Program at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Center in Tampa, Fla. Gross was previously a professor of clinical medicine and chief of the section of general internal medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
