Awards, Appointments, Announcements

  • Scott W. Lowe, Ph.D., deputy director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's cancer center in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., has been given the fourth American Association for Cancer Research–National Foundation for Cancer Research Professorship in Basic Cancer Research for his work in enlarging the understanding of the genetic factors that influence the aging and death of cancer cells.
  • Margaret R. Spitz, M.D., chair of the department of epidemiology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, has been awarded the 2004 Dr. William Cahan Distinguished Professor Award from the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute. The honor carries a $600,000 award to conduct epidemiologic research.
  • George Weiner, M.D., director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, has been named chair of the Iowa Consortium for Comprehensive Cancer Control.
  • Deborah Winn, Ph.D., has been appointed chief of the Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program's Clinical and Genetic Epidemiology Research Branch at the National Cancer Institute. Winn had been the branch's acting chief and was also a senior epidemiologist for Tobacco and Cancer Control.
  • Judd W. Moul, M.D., has been named the new chief of the Division of Urology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Moul, who is retiring as a colonel in the United States Army Medical Corps, was a professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., and director of the Center for Prostate Disease Research.
  • Ossama Al-Mefty, M.D., professor and chairman of the department of neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in Little Rock, has received the Mahaley Clinical Research Award from the National Brain Tumor Foundation in cooperation with the Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section on Tumors.
  • Ira Mellman, Ph.D., has been named scientific director of the Yale Cancer Center in New Haven, Conn. Mellman is the Sterling Professor of Cell Biology and Immunobiology at the Yale University School of Medicine and chairman of the Department of Cell Biology.
