Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Sir Paul Nurse, Ph.D., has been appointed president of Rockefeller University in New York. He will take over the position this fall.Nurse is chief executive of Cancer Research U.K. and was one of three researchers who won the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on key regulators of the cell cycle. Nurse heads the cell cycle laboratory at Cancer Research U.K.s London Research Institute.
Rimer Appointed
Barbara K. Rimer, Dr.P.H., has been appointed deputy director for population sciences at the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill, and professor of health behavior and health education in the universitys School of Public Health.

Rimer was previously director of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the National Cancer Institute.
Survivorship Awards Announced
Four individuals have won the 2003 Carpe Diem Award, given by the Lance Armstrong Foundation for their research and efforts in cancer survivorship.
Judah Folkman, M.D., of Harvard Medical School in Boston, received the Pioneer of Survivorship award for his research in medical oncology. Folkmans work led to the development of antiangiogenic therapies.
Cancer survivor Irene Foo received the Voice of Survivorship award for her involvement in bringing cancer support and services to the Chinese-speaking community.
Cancer survivor and cyclist Karen Hornbostel received the Spirit of Survivorship award for her efforts in integrating exercise into the cancer recovery process.
Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., a cancer survivor and director of the National Cancer Institute, received the Champion of Survivorship award for his dedication to research in cancer survivorship.
Two to Lead Immunology Program
William E. Carson III, M.D., and Yang Liu, Ph.D., have been selected to lead the immunology program at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer CenterArthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
Carson, a surgical oncologist, is examining the relationship between cancer and the immune system. Liu, Ralph W. Kurtz Chair in Pathology and director of the Division of Cancer Immunology in the department of pathology, is looking at why the immune system is not able to control certain cancers.
Washington University Appoints Two
Reid Townsend, Ph.D., has been appointed director of the Washington University Proteomics Center and associate professor at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Townsend was previously employed at Oxford GlycoSciences in Oxford, England.
Ming You, M.D., Ph.D., will lead the Chemoprevention Program at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University. You was previously at Ohio State University.
Paskett Elected
Electra D. Paskett, Ph.D., has been named director at large for the American Society of Preventive Oncology. Paskett is associate director of population sciences at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Columbus, and is co-leader of the centers Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program.
