Judah Folkman, M.D., has won the 2003 Novartis Award for Hypertension Research. Folkman, a pioneer in the field of angiogenesis, is a professor of pediatric surgery and a professor of cell biology at Childrens Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. The award is given by the American Heart Associations Council for High Blood Pressure Research.
Anna D. Barker, Ph.D., has received the 8th Frances Williams Preston Award for Breast Cancer Awareness. Barker is deputy director of strategic scientific initiatives at the National Cancer Institute. The award recognizes individuals who have made important contributions to the lives of women with breast cancer.
Valerie Castle, M.D., a pediatric oncologist and chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases at the University of Michigan Medical School, has received the 2003 RARE Foundation Award for Health Care Excellence. The award recognizes individuals who have exceptional accomplishments in the work place.
Matthew J. Ellis, M.D., Ph.D., has been named the first holder of the Anheuser-Busch Chair in Medical Oncology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center, St. Louis, Mo. Ellis is head of the breast cancer program at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at the Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Kevin J. Cullen, M.D., a specialist in head and neck cancers, has been named director of the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center in Baltimore. Cullen was previously interim director at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., and a professor of medicine, oncology, and otolaryngology at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Nine individuals have been named to the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The council advises the secretary and the director of the agency. The new members are Andrew Balas, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the School of Public Health at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo.; Doug Campos-Outcalt, M.P.A., medical director, Maricopa County Department of Public Health, Phoenix, Ariz.; Michael Everett, Ph.D., founder and CEO, Avator International Inc., Lake Mary, Fla.; Andrew Fishman, M.D., Cogent Healthcare Inc., Los Angeles; Arthur Garson, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va.; Jessie Gruman, Ph.D., president and executive director, Center for the Advancement of Health, Washington, D.C.; Terry Jacobson, M.D., director of the Office of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Grady Health Systems, Atlanta; James J. Rohack, M.D., senior staff cardiologist, Scott and White Clinic, Temple, Texas; and Paul Wallace, M.D., executive director, Care Management Institute, Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, Calif.
