Awards, Appointments, Announcements
David M. Goldenberg, Sc.D., M.D., has been awarded a medal by the Swedish Society of Medicine and the Swedish Society of Oncology for his contributions to the development of the use of radiolabeled antibodies for cancer detection and therapy.

Goldenberg presented the 19th Elis Berven Lecture at the 2002 annual meeting of the two societies. He is the president of the Garden State Cancer Center in Belleville, N.J.
Compas Named
Bruce Compas, Ph.D., has been named Patricia and Rodes Hart Professor of Psychology and Human Development at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He has also been named director of psycho-oncology in the Pain and Symptom Management Program of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville.

Compas was previously at the University of Vermont in Burlington, where he was professor of Psychology, Medicine, and Pediatrics and director of the doctoral program in clinical psychology.
Researchers Awarded
Three cancer researchers have received the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award for 2002. Recipients of the award receive up to $1.5 million to be used over 5 to 7 years to support translational cancer research. The awardees include:
James L.M. Ferrara, M.D., professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor and director of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Program at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Ann Arbor.
D. Gary Gilliland, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and director of the Leukemia Program at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
Daniel A. Haber, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also associate chief for research in the Hematology Oncology Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, chair of the Cancer Genetics Program at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Cancer Risk Analysis.
Two Join Fox Chase
Two researchers have joined the Division of Basic Science at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
Virologist Sven-Erik Behrens, Ph.D., was previously at the Institute for Virology of the Justus-Liebig University in Giessen, Germany. His research focuses on the hepatitis C virus, which is one cause of primary liver cancer.
Cell biologist Edna Cukierman, Ph.D., was previously at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at the National Institutes of Health. Her research focuses on how cells interact with the extracellular matrix.
Abraham Appointed
Robert Abraham, Ph.D., was appointed director of the Burnham Institutes Cancer Center in La Jolla, Calif. He was previously professor and program director for signal transduction research and served as acting director of the Cancer Center.
