Bruce M. Spiegelman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston, has received the Fourth Annual Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Distinguished Achievement in Metabolic Research for his contributions to the understanding of metabolism. The award, a $50,000 cash prize and a silver commemorative medallion, will be presented at the annual award dinner in New York City on Oct. 16, 2003.
Brian Druker, M.D., has been awarded the Braunschweig Prize, a 50,000 Euro (US$56,700) prize from the city of Braunschweig, Germany. The award recognizes Drukers achievements in molecular cancer therapy. Druker, who is the director of the Leukemia Program at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, identified the compound imatinib (Gleevec), which has been approved for chronic myelogenous leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors.
Naomi Halas, Ph.D., Stanley C. Moore professor of electrical and computer engineering and professor of chemistry at Rice University, Houston, has received the Breast Cancer Research Program Innovator Award from the Department of Defense for her research on the use of nanoshells for detecting and treating breast cancer. The award, which includes a $3 million grant over 4 years, encourages individuals to pursue novel approaches to eradicating breast cancer.
Nancy Hutchison, Ph.D., of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, has received the Bruce Alberts Award for Excellence in Science Education from the American Society for Cell Biology. Hutchison is co-founder and director of the Science Education Partnership professional development program at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Edward Maibach, Ph.D., has been appointed associate director for Strategic Dissemination at the National Cancer Institute. He will be responsible for coordinating NCI-wide efforts to eliminate suffering and death due to cancer by 2015. Maibach was previously director of social marketing at Porter Novelli, a global marketing and communication agency. He is an adjunct associate professor in the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. He has held positions in NCIs Division of Cancer Prevention and Control and NCIs Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences.
Robert T. Croyle, Ph.D, has been appointed director of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the National Cancer Institute. He was previously acting director of the division and associate director for behavior research prior to that. He has also been on the faculty at the University of Utah and the Huntsman Cancer Institute, both in Salt Lake City.
Richard T. Cheney, M.D., has been named chairman of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. He was previously interim chairman of the department.
James H. Keen, Ph.D., has been named dean of the Jefferson College of Graduate Studies at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Keen is professor of microbiology and immunology at Jefferson Medical College and associate director of Jeffersons Kimmel Cancer Center.
Steven E. McKenzie, M.D., Ph.D., has been named vice president for science policy and technology transfer at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia. McKenzie, a professor of medicine and pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College, is director of the Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research and the Division of Hematology at Jefferson Medical College.
Leonard G. Gomella, M.D., chair of urology at Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, received the 2003 National Cancer Institute Outstanding Achievement Award. The award recognizes outstanding achievement by an alumnus of the NCI Intramural Program.
Susan E. McCann, Ph.D., has been appointed assistant member in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. She was previously a research assistant professor in the department of social and preventive medicine at the University of Buffalo.
