H. Kim Lyerly, M.D., has been named director of the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center in Durham, N.C. Lyerly was recently a professor of surgery, associate professor of pathology, and assistant professor of immunology at Duke University Medical Center. He succeeds O. Michael Colvin, M.D., who will be returning full time to his research.
David C. Heimbrook, Ph.D., has been named vice president of Oncology Research at Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., Nutley, N.J. Heimbrook will be responsible for creating an oncology research strategy and for portfolio assessment and risk evaluation of global oncology milestones.
Heimbrook was previously executive director and head of the department of cancer research at Merck Research Laboratories.
The Society of Surgical Oncology has named Alfred M. Cohen, M.D., president of its new executive council. Cohen is director and chief executive officer of the Lucille Parker Markey Cancer Center at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
Other newly elected council members include: president-elect S. Eva Singletary, M.D., University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston; vice president Timothy J. Eberlein, M.D., Washington University in St. Louis; and treasurer William G. Cance, M.D., University of Florida, Gainesville.
In addition, Mitchell C. Posner, M.D., University of Chicago and Monica Morrow, M.D., Northwestern University Hospital, Chicago have been elected to 3-year terms on the council. Jeffrey A. Drebin, M.D., Ph.D., Washington University, St. Louis, was elected councillor-at-large.
J. Gordon McVie, M.D., has been appointed chairman of the Oncology Advisory Board for the U.K. biopharmaceutical company KS Biomedix, Guildford. McVie is past director general and scientific director of the Cancer Research Campaign (now Cancer Research U.K.), a past president of the European Organization for Research on Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), and a founding member of the National Cancer Research Institute.
