Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Yong-Jun Liu, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed chair of the Department of Immunology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Liu, who works on improving cancer vaccines, comes to M. D. Anderson from the biotechnology company DNAX, in Palo Alto, Calif.

Kelley Appointed

Mark C. Kelley, M.D., assistant professor of surgery at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn., has been named chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

Kelley also serves as the chairman of the Vanderbilt Medical Center Cancer Committee and clinical director of the Vanderbilt Breast Center.

Eng Honored

Charis Eng, M.D., Ph.D., Klotz Chair in Cancer Research and director of the division of human genetics in the Department of Internal Medicine at Ohio State University in Columbus, has won the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, given annually by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Eng will use part of the award money—$1.5 million over 5 years—to identify people with Cowden syndrome, a hereditary disorder linked to a higher risk of breast and thyroid cancer.

Three Appointed to RPCI

Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. has appointed three researchers to faculty positions.

Christine B. Ambrosone, Ph.D., has been appointed chair of epidemiology of the Department of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences. She was previously at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

Peter Demant, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed distinguished member of the department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. He was previously at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam.

Allen Gao, M.D., Ph.D., was appointed associate member in the departments of Medicine and Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Gao was previously at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
