Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson appointed an interim management team for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.David Fleming, M.D., previously deputy director for science and public health, has been appointed acting director; James Hughes, M.D., director of the National Center for Infectious diseases, and Julie Gerberding, M.D., acting deputy director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases, will lead the agencys bioterrorism efforts; and Michael Osterholm, Ph.D., will serve as HHS representative at CDC.
CDC director Jeffrey P. Koplan, M.D., retired from CDC and is now vice president for academic health affairs at Emory University, Atlanta.
DeVita Appointed
Vincent T. DeVita, M.D., former director of the National Cancer Institute has been appointed chairman of the scientific advisory board of Light Sciences Corporation, a biotechnology company in Washington state specializing in oncology, ophthalmology and cardiovascular disease.
DeVita is currently professor of medicine and director of the Yale Cancer Center. He served as NCIs director from 1980 to 1988.
Fauci Awarded Albany Prize
Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., was awarded the $500,000 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research. Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.
Fauci is being recognized for his contributions to AIDS research and for developing therapies for people with infectious diseases.
Kaufman to Direct Wistar Institute
Russel E. Kaufman, M.D., has been appointed director and chief executive officer of the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.
Kaufman was vice dean for education and academic affairs for the Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, N.C., and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs for the Duke University Health System. His research focuses on the genetics of blood diseases and cancer.
Welch to Head New Center
Dan Welch, Ph.D., will head a new national cancer research center created through a partnership among Penn State University, Penn State College of Medicine, the University of Chicago and the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
Welch was previously at the Jake Gittlen Cancer Research Institute at Penn State. The goal of the new center will be to understand cancer metastases and translate those findings into better treatments.
