Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., has been nominated by President George W. Bush to head the National Institutes of Health. Ruth L. Kirschstein, M.D., has been serving as the acting director for more than 2 years.

Dr. Elias Zerhouni

 
Zerhouni is the executive vice dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore. He is also the chairman of the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science and a professor of radiology and biomedical engineering. Zerhouni is also a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Board of Scientific Advisors.

The nomination will take effect after confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Two Receive Wiley Prize

Stanley J. Korsmeyer, M.D., of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, and H. Robert Horvitz, Ph.D., of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., received the inaugural Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences.

The prize recognizes scientists who have opened new fields of research or advanced novel concepts and their applications in biomedicine. Korsmeyer and Horvitz will receive a $25,000 grant to pursue their research interests.

Clancy to Direct AHRQ

Carolyn Clancy, M.D., has been named acting director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. She succeeds John M. Eisenberg, M.D., who passed away March 10.

Clancy also serves as clinical associate professor at George Washington University and serves as senior associate editor for Health Services Research. In addition, she has been the director for AHRQ’s Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Center for Primary Care Research.

Antin Named

Joseph H. Antin, M.D., was named president-elect of the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He will assume the presidency in 2003.

Antin is chief of the Adult Oncology Stem Cell Transplant Service at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. He is also an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

AACR Recognizes Young Oncologists

Thirteen young oncologists have been awarded research grants from the American Association for Cancer Research. They include:

Piotr Sicinski, M.D., Ph.D., Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has been awarded the Gertrude B. Elion Cancer Research Award.

Victoria Lundblad, Ph.D., Baylor College of Medicine, has been awarded the National Foundation for Cancer Research Professorship in Basic Cancer Research.

Manuel L. Penichet, Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles, and June M. Chan, Sc.D., University of California, San Francisco, have been awarded the California Department of Health Services Career Development Awards in Gender-Related Cancer Research.

Haihua Gu, Ph.D., Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center, has been awarded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Career Development Award.

Anjali K. Gupta, M.D., University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, has been awarded the Cancer Research Foundation of America Career Development Award in Translational Lung Cancer Research.

Hayley M. McDaid, Ph.D., Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Hans Guido Wendel, M.D., Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, have been awarded Amgen Inc. Fellowships in Clinical or Translational Research.

Archie N. Tse, M.D., Ph.D., Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, has been awarded the Bristol-Myers Squibb Oncology Research Fellowship in Clinical Research.

Jiri Zavadil, Ph.D., Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has been awarded the Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research Fellowship in Basic Research.

Mark G. Frattini, M.D., Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has been awarded the Anna D. Barker Fellowship in Basic Cancer Research.

Nigel P. Mongan, Ph.D., Weill Medical College, Cornell University, has been awarded the Cancer Research Foundation of America Fellowship in Prevention Research.

Balazs Halmos, M.D., Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, has been awarded the AstraZeneca-Cancer Research Foundation of America Fellowship in Translational Lung Cancer Research.

Spencer Appointed

Trent Spencer, Ph.D., has been appointed the director of the Gene Therapy Laboratory at the AFLAC Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He is also an assistant professor of pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine.

Before joining Children’s Healthcare, Spencer headed a gene therapy group at the South Carolina Cancer Center, Columbia, S.C.
