Awards, Appointments, Announcements
H. Robert Horvitz, Ph.D., received the Fourteenth Annual Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Distinguished Achievement in Neuroscience Research, which includes a $50,000 cash prize.

Horvitz received the award for his work, including the discovery of that specific genes control programmed cell death, or apoptosis.
He is a professor of biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the McGovern Institute for Brain Research. He is a neurobiologist and geneticist at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a Howard Hughes investigator.
Rosenberg Receives Health Award
Steven A. Rosenberg, M.D., Ph.D., received the Health Memorial Award. This award honors those who have made significant contributions to cancer patient care.
Rosenberg pioneered the development of immunotherapies for patients with advanced cancer and was the first to conduct studies of the gene therapy of cancer.
He is chief of surgery at the National Cancer Institute and a professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.
Pryce Receives Excellence Award
U.S. Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Ohio) has received the American Cancer Societys 2001 Public Policy Leadership Award for her advocacy of cancer-related issues.
Pryce, a member of the House Republican leadership and Co-Chair of the House Cancer Caucus, has played a role in increasing access to clinical trials for cancer patients. She authored the Access to Cancer Clinical Trials Act of 2002.
Pryce also helped pass the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Treatment Act and the Native American Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Treatment Act.
Skarulis Joins Sloan-Kettering
Patricia C. Skarulis has been named vice president of information systems and chief information officer of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She will help improve use of past clinical data.
Skarulis was previously at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center in Chicago where she was vice president and chief information officer. She has also taught health systems management at Rush University in Chicago.
Wilson Receives Award
Charles B. Wilson, M.D., has been awarded the Pituitary Network Associations Gentle Giant Award in recognition of his contributions to the field of pituitary/endocrine medicine. Wilson is a professor emeritus of the University of California at San Francisco. He founded and directed UCSFs Brain Tumor Research Center.
Effros Appointed
Rita B. Effros, Ph.D., has been appointed to the Elizabeth and Thomas Plott Chair in Gerontology. Recipients of this award conduct research and education activities related to aging and longevity.
Effros is a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles. Her research focuses on aging and cancer in the elderly.
Shaw Named
Robert N. Shaw has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Shaw was previously a director of health care practice at Korn/Ferry International, and president and chief executive officer of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Centers Outreach Corporation in Houston.
