Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Janet D. Rowley, M.D., has been selected as one of 17 members of President Bush’s Council on Bioethics, which advises the President on scientific issues and ethical policy.

Rowley is a Blum-Reise Distinguished Professor of Medicine and of Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Her research focuses on identifying chromosomal mutations that cause cancer.

Sawyers Awarded

Charles Sawyers, M.D., has received the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, which recognizes outstanding physicians and scientists who work to prevent, diagnose and treat various diseases.

Sawyers is a physician-scientist at the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California at Los Angeles. The award will support his research into a new drug that targets a genetic mutation associated with prostate cancer.

Ahearn Honored

Michael J. Ahearn, M.D., has been inducted into the Texas Science Hall of Fame, an honor that recognizes Texans who have made significant scientific accomplishments in the state.

Ahearn is dean of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. He also directs the Summer Science Program in Biomedical Sciences, which allows high school graduates to work alongside M. D. Anderson faculty mentors over the summer.

Young Medical Oncologist Named

Caio Max S. Rocha Lima, M.D., has been selected to represent the United States as one of the Young Medical Oncologists at the European Society of Medical Oncology meeting in Nice, France, in October 2002.

Lima is an assistant professor of medicine in the Gastrointestinal and Thoracic Program at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa, Florida.
