Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Robert A. Figlin, M.D., has been named first holder of the Henry Alvin and Carrie L. Meinhardt Chair for Kidney Cancer Research. The chair was established by a $1 million endowment from the Meinhardts to the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Robert A. Figlin

 
Figlin is a professor of medicine and urology at UCLA and also serves as medical director of the Thoracic and Genitourinary Oncology Program in the departments of medicine, surgery, and urology. Figlin has been program director of Solid Tumor Developmental Therapeutics for the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Two Appointed to Albert Einstein

Thomas Rohan, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed chairman of the Department of Epidemiology and Social Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in New York and associate director of the Cancer Control and Epidemiology program at the Einstein Cancer Center.

Rohan was previously a professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the role of molecular, nutritional, and hormonal factors in the cause of breast cancer and other cancers.

Roman Perez-Soler, M.D., has been appointed director of the Division of Medical Oncology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and associate director for Clinical Research at the Einstein Cancer Center.

Dr. Roman Perez-Soler

 
Perez-Soler was previously associate director for Clinical and Translational Research at the Kaplan Comprehensive Cancer Center at New York University. His research interests lie in the treatment and prevention of lung cancer in high-risk populations using gene therapy and other approaches.

Marks Prize Awarded

Four cancer researchers have been awarded the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research. The $125,000 prize, created in honor of Paul Marks, M.D., president emeritus of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, is awarded to young investigators who contribute to the basic understanding and treatment of cancer. This is the first time the award has been given.

The Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research was given out in December. Recipients include: Titia de Lange, Ph.D., head of the laboratory of cell biology and genetics at Rockefeller University; Stephen Elledge, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry at Baylor College of Medicine; Xiaodong Wang, Ph.D., professor of biomedical science at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas; and William Kaelin Jr., M.D., associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Kelly Named Chairman

Thomas J. Kelly, M.D., Ph.D., has been named chairman of the Sloan-Kettering Institute. He was previously at Johns Hopkins University, where he was director for the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences.

Marnett Honored by AAAS

Lawrence J. Marnett, Ph.D., has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in honor of his work on lipid oxidation and the discovery of "super aspirins."

Marnett is Mary Geddes Stahlman Professor of Cancer Research and director of the A.B. Hancock Jr. Research Center at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Sosman to Lead Melanoma Program

Jeffrey A. Sosman, M.D., has joined the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and will lead its melanoma program. He will also lead a program in tumor immunology and serve as medical director of Vanderbilt-Ingram’s Clinical Trials Office.

Sosman was previously associate professor of medicine and director of Clinical Research at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He has also been on the faculty at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine.

Hamilton Appointed

Stanley R. Hamilton, M.D., has been appointed to the Frederick F. Becker Distinguished University Chair for Cancer Research at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Hamilton heads M. D. Anderson’s Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and directs the Cancer Genomics Program. Hamilton was previously at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was director of the Division of Gastrointestinal-Liver Pathology.

Henske Awarded

Elizabeth P. Henske, M.D., a researcher at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, has been awarded the Rothberg Award for Courage in Research by the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance. The award recognizes Henske’s research into the cause and treatment for tuberous sclerosis, a genetic disorder that leads to benign tumors in multiple organs.
