Awards, Appointments, Announcements

James Huff, Ph.D., has received the American Public Health Association’s David P. Rall Award for Advocacy in Public Health. Huff is an investigator with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences who helped launch federal programs that categorize the potential hazards of chemicals for scientists and laymen.

Potter Named

John Potter, M.D., Ph.D., has been named director of the Public Health Sciences Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. He is also a professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

Potter was previously head of Fred Hutchinson’s Cancer Prevention Research Program.

Gelmann Named

Edward P. Gelmann, M.D., professor of medicine and oncology at Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University, has been appointed the Dr. William M. Scholl Chair in Medical Oncology.

Gellmann is also director of the Lombardi Cancer Center Program in Growth Regulation of Cancer and the director of Lombardi’s Clinical Research Management Office.

Three Appointed to Fox Chase

Three researchers were appointed to positions at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

Andre A. Konski, M.D., has been named clinical director of the center’s Prostate Cancer Risk-Assessment Program. Steven J. Feigenberg, M.D., has joined the department of radiation oncology as a staff radiation oncologist. Neil S. Topham, M.D., has been named chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery in the department of surgical oncology.

RTOG Appoints Statistician

Charles B. Scott, Ph.D., has been named group statistician of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and senior director of statistics for the American College of Radiology (ACR). He was previously associate director of quality of life research for the ACR.

Scott replaces Thomas F. Pajak, Ph.D., who will remain with the unit as a senior statistician.

Two to Head Departments

Leonard G. Gomella, M.D., was named chair of the Department of Urology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia. He will also serve as chair of urology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Richard Wender, M.D., was named chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Jefferson Medical College. He was previously vice chair of the department. Wender is an advocate for improved screening strategies for cancer and other diseases.

Lyons Joins Wilmot

Catherine A. Lyons, R.N., was named associate director for strong health cancer services at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, N.Y. Lyons comes to Wilmot from the National Cancer Institute, where she was chief of clinical trials support and research nursing.

At Wilmot, Lyons will oversee coordination of care and services to cancer patients and institute patient satisfaction programs.

Funding Available

The National Brain Tumor Foundation is accepting applications for research funding in the areas of neuro-oncology and neuroscience. More information is available on the NBTF Web site, http://braintumor.org. The deadline for applications is Jan. 31, 2003.

Gershenson Elected

Editor’s note: This item originally appeared in the Oct. 16 issue but omitted some information. The corrected announcement is below.

David M. Gershenson, M.D., was elected division director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Gershenson is a professor and chairman of the Department of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
