Awards, Appointments, Announcements
The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) has appointed Nora A. Janjan, M.D., to chair its Board of Directors. Janjan is a professor of radiation oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. She is a specialist in pain management and palliative care.In addition, ASTRO appointed Joel E. Tepper, M.D., to become the president. Tepper is a professor and chair of radiation oncology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.
Other new members of the ASTRO Board of Directors include president-elect Ted Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D., University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; community practice member-at-large Peter Blitzer, M.D., Radiation Therapy Associated, Cape Coral, Fla.; and academic clinician member-at-large Colleen Lawton, M.D., Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
Ridge to Serve on AJCC
John Andrew Ridge, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed to serve on the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), which formulates and publishes classifications of cancer, including staging and reporting of end results. Members act as liaisons between the AJCC and other professional groups with whom they are affiliated.
Ridge, who is chief of head and neck surgery at Fox Chase Cancer Center, will be a representative of the American Head and Neck Society.
Newman Named to New Center
Lisa Newman, M.D., has been named director of the new Breast Care Center at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She will continue as associate professor of surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School.
As director of the University of Michigan Breast Care Center, Newman will be responsible for directing clinical services for women who have benign and cancerous breast problems.
Reba Appointed
Richard Reba, M.D., has joined the Division of Nuclear Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C.
He will continue his association with the Biomedical Imaging Program at the National Cancer Institute.
Grants and Fellowships Available
The American Brain Tumor Association is accepting applications for the following fellowships and grants. The deadline for submission is January 7, 2003.
Basic Research Fellowships are 2-year, $70,000 awards for post-doctorates conducting basic brain tumor research. Eligible candidates include M.D.s within 2 years of completing a residency and Ph.D.s with no more than 30 months of post-doctoral laboratory experience.
Translational Research Grants are 1-year $50,000 awards for preclinical research beyond the molecular level. Human studies are excluded. Eligible candidates are M.D.s who have up to 5 years post-residency and have attained junior faculty to assistant professor stature or Ph.D.s who have no more than 5 years post-doctoral laboratory experience.
