Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Alfred G. Knudson Jr., M.D., Ph.D., has received the 14th annual Wick R. Williams Memorial Award.Knudson, a pioneering cancer geneticist at the Fox Chase Cancer Center, is known for his "two-hit" theory of cancer causation, which predicted the existence of tumor-suppressor genes.
Knudson has served as acting director of the National Cancer Institutes human genetics program, president and scientific director of the Fox Chase Cancer Center, and director of Fox Chases Institute for Cancer Research.
Visco Receives Breast Cancer Award
Fran Visco, president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, has received the 2002 Frances Williams Preston Award for Breast Cancer Awareness, presented by the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tenn. The award recognizes individuals who have contributed to the fight against cancer through their advocacy and support.
Visco, a breast cancer survivor, has served on the Presidents Cancer Panel and was the consumer to chair the Integration Panel of the Department of Defense Peer-Reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program. She has also co-chaired the National Action Plan on Breast Cancer and served on the National Cancer Policy Board.
De la Chapelle Honored
Albert De la Chapelle, M.D., Ph.D., has won the 2002 William Allan Award, which was presented by the American Society of Human Genetics. De la Chapelle is director of the Human Cancer Genetics Program at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Columbus.
Miller Receives Award
Suzanne M. Miller, Ph.D., has been selected to receive the distinguished Cancer Control Award from the American Cancer Society for her contributions to cancer prevention and control. Miller is director of Fox Chase Cancer Centers psychological and behavioral medicine program.
Sporn Honored
Michael B. Sporn, M.D., has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the American Association for Cancer Research-Cancer Research Foundation of America Award for Excellence in Cancer Prevention Research.
Sporn is the Oscar M. Cohn professor of pharmacology and toxicology and of medicine at Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, N.H. He presented a lecture during the AACR Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Meeting in Boston in October.
Dean Named Deputy Director
Donna J. Dean, Ph.D., has been named the first deputy director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, the newest NIH institute. Dean was previously acting director of the institute.
As deputy director, Dean will plan, direct, and manage the programs and resources of the institute, and will lead efforts to expand the institutes collaborations, both inside the NIH and with outside organizations.
