Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Richard D. Klausner, M.D., former director of the National Cancer Institute, was appointed senior fellow and special adviser for counterterrorism to the presidents of the National Academies.Klausner will serve as the liaison for counterterrorism efforts between the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Academies.
Klausner was previously president of the recently dissolved Case Institute of Health, Science, and Technology, a foundation that intended to focus on multidisciplinary solutions to science and health problems. He will continue to run his laboratory at NCI.
Thurn to Head Review Program
Anne Thurn, M.D., has been appointed director of the evidence-based review program in the Office of Dietary Supplements at NIH. Thurn was previously the associate director of the Cancer Information Products and Systems at NCI.
Thurns achievements include making enhancements to the Physician Data Query clinical trials database and CancerNet. She has also helped to redesign NCIs Web site, cancer.gov.
Sarosy Named
Gisele A. Sarosy, M.D., a medical oncologist, has been named acting director of the Cancer Information Products Systems at NCI. She will be replacing Anne Thurn, M.D., who will head NIHs Office of Dietary Supplements.
Prior to Sarosys appointment, she was the deputy director of the Cancer Information Products Systems.
Feigal Appointed
Ellen Feigal, M.D., has been appointed acting director of the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis at NCI. She was previously deputy director of DCTD.
Feigal has also been part of the NCIs Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program. Her achievements include helping to create the national AIDS Malignancy Consortium, and the AIDS and Cancer Specimen Bank.
Wittes Named Physician-in-Chief
Robert Wittes, M.D., has been appointed physician-in-chief at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York.
Wittes was previously NCIs deputy director for extramural science. He is a former editor of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
