Cancer Information Service Celebrates Silver Anniversary
The National Cancer Institutes Cancer Information Service, which has helped more than 9 million people since it opened in 1976, marked its 25th anniversary at a recent meeting in Seattle.
The CIS, which is best known for its toll-free telephone service, 1-800-4-CANCER, last year introduced LiveHelp, an Internet instant messaging service, for people who have access to NCIs website cancer.gov. The CIS also has a broad partnership program that enlists state and regional organizations to reach people who do not have telephone or Internet access.
In 1976, CIS answered 47,000 calls. In 2001, through the phone, the Internet, the partnership program, and other channels, the CIS handled more than 1.8 million inquiries from around the nation.
