Awards, Appointments, Announcements
James E. Rothman, Ph.D., has won the 2002 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Research. The award recognizes individuals whose accomplishments have advanced the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and even cure of many diseases.Rothman, who is head of the Laboratory of Cellular Biochemistry at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, is being recognized for his discovery of the mechanisms of cellular transport.
NCAB Members Appointed
President George W. Bush has appointed seven people to the National Cancer Advisory Board. Each official will serve a six-year term.
John E. Niederhuber, M.D., was named chairman of the board. Niederhuber is assistant dean for oncology and professor of surgery and oncology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. He is also director of the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Other newly elected members include: Moon S. Chen, Jr., Ph.D., head of the University of California at Davis Cancer Centers Cancer Control and Prevention Program; Kenneth H. Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Eppley Institute for Cancer Research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center; Jean B. deKernion, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Urology at the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine; Marlys J. Popma, executive director of the Republican Party of Iowa; Franklyn G. Prendergast, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center; and Lydia Gonzalez Ryan, M.S.N., P.N.P., clinical director of Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant at Childrens Healthcare of Atlantas AFLAC Cancer Center.
HHMI Elects Two
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has appointed Joseph L. Goldstein, M.D., as a trustee of the HHMI.
Goldstein is chairman of the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and was previously chair of HHMIs Medical Advisory Board. He won the Nobel Prize in 1985 for his work in cholesterol metabolism.
Craig B. Thompson, M.D., scientific director of the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, will succeed Goldstein as chair of HHMIs Medical Advisory Board.
Jordan Honored by Queen
V. Craig Jordan, M.D., was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II. Jordan was recognized for his development of tamoxifen for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer.
He is professor of cancer research and director of the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Research Program at Northwestern University in Chicago.
