Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Richard G. Pestell, M.D., Ph.D., has been named director of the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.Pestell was previously chair of the Division of Endocrine-Dependent Tumor Biology at Albert Einstein Cancer Center in New York. He has also been on the faculty at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago.
His research focuses on the development of new nontoxic cancer therapies that specifically target tumors.
ASTRO Names New Officers
The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology has appointed new officers for 2003.
Ted Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D., has been named president-elect. He is the Isadore Lampe Professor and Chair at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Michigan.
Peter Blitzer, M.D., has been named community practice member-at-large. He is in private practice at Radiation Therapy Associates in Cape Coral, Fla.
Colleen Lawton, M.D., has been named academic clinician member-at-large. She is a professor of radiation oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Sarah Donaldson, M.D., and Minesh Mehta, M.D., have been named to the nominating committee. Donaldson is a professor in the department of radiation oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Mehta is a professor and chairman of human oncology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
The new officers will begin their terms in October.
NCCAM Appoints Advisory Council
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has added six new members to its National Advisory Council on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The council provides recommendations on the conduct and support of complementary and alternative medicine research at the National Institutes of Health.
Zang-Hee Cho, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Radiological Sciences, Psychiatry and Human Behavior, and Ophthamology at the University of California at Irvine; Kristina M. Collins, D.C., is a chiropractor at Old Dominion Chiropractic, Inc. in McLean, Va.; Murray Goldstein, D.O., is medical director of the United Cerebral Palsy Research and Educational Foundation in Washington, D.C.; Michael Irwin, M.D., is professor and director of the Norman Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology at the University of California at Los Angeles Neuropsychiatric Institute; Barbara Timmermann, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Pharmacology/Toxicology at the University of Arizona; and Benjamin Chi-Kuo Yang, C.A., O.M.D., is commissioner and member of the State of California Industrial Medical Council in San Francisco.
Colorectal Surgeons Elected
The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons has elected six new officers to its executive council.
Richard P. Pillingham, M.D., professor of surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle, was named president.
David J. Schoetz, M.D., chair of the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, Mass., and professor or surgery at Tufts University, was named president-elect.
Sergio W. Larach, M.D., associate professor of surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, was named vice president.
Lester Rosen, M.D., professor of clinical surgery at the Penn State University, was named secretary.
James W. Fleshman Jr., M.D., professor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, was named research foundation president.
Steven D. Wexner, M.D., professor of surgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, was named member-at-large.
