Awards, Appointments, Announcements
John R. Seffrin, Ph.D., chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society, has been elected president of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Seffrins term as UICC president, which began at the organizations general assembly in July, will last 4 years. He will continue his duties at the American Cancer Society throughout this term.
Pallavicini Appointed
Cancer scientist Maria G. Pallavicini, Ph.D., has been named dean of natural sciences at the University of California at Merced, a new school in the UC system that will open in fall 2004.
Pallavicini has served in the departments of laboratory medicine and radiation oncology at the University of California at San Francisco. She is also a member of the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her research focuses on understanding the genetic and functional changes that contribute to cancers.
Ziegler Awarded
John L. Ziegler, M.D., professor emeritus and director of the Cancer Risk Program at the University of California at San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been named the first recipient of the Paul Carbone Memorial Award for International Oncology.
Ziegler was recognized for his research and teaching in Uganda, where he focused on HIV-related malignancies for the World Health Organization.
The award was named for Paul Carbone, M.D., who died in February. Carbone was associate director of medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute from 1960 to 1976 and then went to the University of Wisconsin, where he served as the director of the schools Comprehensive Cancer Center from 1978 to 1997.
Okunieff Named to Chair
Paul Okunieff, M.D., chair of radiation oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Centers James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, was named chair of the Southwest Oncology Groups Radiation Oncology Committee.
He will lead the clinical and basic science research of all radiation therapy studies through the Southwestern Oncology Group. Okunieff also chairs the Translational Research Committee of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.
Tobacco Researchers Recognized
Tobacco researchers Sir Richard Peto and Sir Richard Doll, Ph.D., received the King Olav Vs Prize for Outstanding Cancer Research at the 18th International UICC Cancer Congress in Oslo, Norway.
Their research, which mapped the health hazards of smoking, helped prove the link between smoking and lung cancer. Their research also revealed that smoking is a factor in other causes of death, such as heart disease.
Thevenot Named
Laura Thevenot has been named executive director of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

Thevenot was previously chief operating officer and executive vice president of the Federation of American Hospitals. She has also served as vice president of Federal Affairs for The Health Insurance Association of America.
Fox Chase Appoints Three
The Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia has appointed three researchers to new faculty chairs.
Beatrice Mintz, Ph.D., senior member in the basic science division, was named Jack Schultz Endowed Chair in basic science. Mintzs research focuses on analyzing the underlying mechanisms of melanoma and supports the view that cancer is a developmental defect.
Louis M. Weiner, M.D., chairman of medical oncology, has been named G. Morris Dorrance Jr. Endowed Chair. Weiners research focuses on targeted therapies for cancer. Before becoming medical oncology chairman, he directed Fox Chases immunotherapy program and developed and directed the medical oncology fellowship program.
Robert F. Ozols, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice president for medical science, has been named Audrey Weg Schaus and Geoffrey Alan Weg Endowed Chair in medical science. His research focuses on new approaches to treating ovarian cancer. Prior to joining Fox Chase in 1988, Ozols was head of experimental therapeutics at the National Cancer Institute.
Center Achieves NCI Designation
The University of California at Davis Cancer Center has achieved National Cancer Institute designation, which assures the cancer center a stable stream of federal research to support its cancer research effort.
The UC-Davis Cancer Center has a partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which helps turn defense technologies into new cancer therapies, detection methods, and prevention strategies.
Ongoing projects include studies of proton-beam radiation therapy, photonic probes, and accelerator mass spectrometry.
Call for Nominations
The American Association for Cancer Research is accepting nominations for their scientific achievement awards. Winners will present their research during an award lecture at the 2003 AACR annual meeting in Toronto, Canada.
