Awards, Appointments, Announcements

W.K. Alfred Yung, M.D., has been named chair of the Department of Neuro-Oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Yung is a professor of neurology and a professor of cancer research at M. D. Anderson. His research focuses on combination chemotherapy, biological therapy, and growth factor expression in brain tumors.

ASCO Recognizes Researchers

The American Society of Clinical Oncology presented Career Development Awards to physicians in their first, second or third year as full-time faculty members in a university setting. Winners receive a 3-year grant totaling $170,100 to test a hypothesis or accomplish intended research.

This year’s recipients were: Laura A. Dawson, M.D., University of Michigan; Nancy DeMore, M.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Don S. Dizon, M.D., Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; Dawn L. Hershman, M.D., Columbia University; Lee M. Krug, M.D., Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; Quynh-Thu Le, M.D., Stanford University; Natasha B. Leighl, M.D., Princess Margaret Hospital; Stacy L. Moulder, M.D., Vanderbilt University Medical Center; Luis E. Raez, M.D., University of Miami School of Medicine; George I. Salti, M.D., University of Illinois at Chicago; David B. Solit, M.D., Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Hruszkewycz to Direct NCI Branch

Andrew M. Hruszkewycz, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed program director of the Organ Systems Branch of the National Cancer Institute.

Hruszkewycz was previously the medical officer/program director for clinical trials in NCI’s Prostate and Urologic Cancer Research Group. Prior to that, he was a senior staff fellow in the Clinical Pathology Department.

Tuszynski Joins Temple University

George P. Tuszynski, Ph.D., has joined the faculty at Temple University’s College of Science and Technology in Philadelphia.

Tuszynski come to Temple from MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. He has also held positions at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia and the Lankenau Medical Research Center in Wynnewood.

His research focuses on angiogenesis and prevention of tumor growth.

Schuller Honored

Ohio State University has named David E. Schuller, M.D., the first holder of the Max Morehouse Chair in Cancer Research. The chair supports the work of a nationally recognized member in cancer research.

Schuller is director of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and deputy director of the Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center. He has also chaired OSU’s Department of Otolaryngology.

Lyman Appointed

Gary Lyman, M.D., has been appointed director of biostatics and associate director for health services and outcomes research by the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York.

Lyman was previously director of the Albany Medical Center’s Cancer Center and Research Institute and head of the Center for Health Outcomes and Pharmacoeconomic Research at the State University of New York (SUNY) Albany School of Public Health.

He will relocate the Coordinating Center for the Awareness of Neutropenia in Chemotherapy Study Group to the Wilmot Cancer Center from Albany.

Durant Recognized

John R. Durant, M.D., has been named National Cancer Fighter of the year for his leadership in the implementation of cancer treatment, education, research, and patient care. The award was presented at the 38th annual American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Orlando in May.

Durant has been the director of the Cancer Training Program at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, president of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, vice president for health affairs, and director of the medical Center at the University of Alabama.

Durant also served as the first executive vice president of ASCO.

NAS Announces New Members

Three cancer researchers have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, an organization of scientists and engineers that advises the government on scientific and technological matters.

Joseph F. Fraumeni, M.D, is director of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute.

Harvey Cantor, M.D., is chairman of the Department of Cancer Immunology and AIDS at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Bruce Spiegelman, Ph.D., is a professor of cell biology at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Wadler Appointed

Scott Wadler, M.D., has been appointed first incumbent of the Richard T. Silver Distinguished Professorship of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.

Wadler comes from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he was a professor of medicine and of obstetrics and gynecology and directed the gastrointestinal oncology program.

He was an attending physician at Montefiore Hospital as well as Bronx Municipal Hospital and North Central Bronx Hospital.

Lymphoma Researchers Recognized

Two cancer clinicians have received 3-year Career Development Award grants totaling $225,000 each from the Lymphoma Research Foundation. This is the first year this award has been given.

Sherif S. Farag, M.D., Ph.D., of Ohio State University, Columbus, received the award to study the effectiveness of Rituximab and immune cell therapy for leukemia.

Sagar Lonial, M.D., of the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University, Atlanta, received the award to study dendritic cells as a therapy for leukemia.

Scholarships Available

The Rockefeller Brothers Fund is accepting applications for its 2003 Charles E. Culpeper Scholarships in Medical Science Program. The program provides awards of $100,000 per year for 3 years to support the career development of academic physicians.
