Awards, Appointments, Announcements

The American Society of Clinical Oncology presented several awards at its 38th annual meeting in Orlando in May.

John Mendelsohn, M.D., president of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, received the David A. Karnofsky Award for his research on monoclonal antibodies.

Ellen V. Sigal, Ph.D., chair of the Board for the Friends of Cancer Research in Washington, D.C., received the Special Recognition Award for her role in establishing the FOCR in 1996.

General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, retired U.S. Army general, received the Special Recognition Award for raising public awareness about prostate cancer.

Joseph V. Simone, M.D., clinical director emeritus of the University of Utah’s Huntsman Cancer Institute and professor emeritus of pediatrics and medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine, received the Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement for his research in childhood leukemia.

Deborah Pryce, congresswoman from Ohio, received the Public Service Award for her advocacy for quality cancer care.

Richard Klausner, M.D., executive director of the global health program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and former director of the National Cancer Institute, received the Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Leadership.

Alfred G. Knudson Jr., M.D., Ph.D., senior member and senior adviser to the president of the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, was awarded the Pediatric Oncology Lectureship for his research in the genetics of retinoblastoma.

Peter Greenwald, M.D., Dr.P.H., director of the Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute, received the American Cancer Society Award for his research in chemoprevention, nutrition, early detection, biomarker development and validation, and preventive oncology training.

Klausner Appointed

Richard D. Klausner, M.D., former director of the National Cancer Institute, has been named executive director of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s global health program.

Klausner has served as senior fellow and special adviser to the Presidents of the National Academies for Counter Terrorism and Liason to the White House.

As director of the global health program, Klausner will focus on infectious disease and vaccines, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, and reproductive and child health.

Pettigrew Named

Roderic I. Pettigrew, M.D., Ph.D., has been named first director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. He is currently professor of radiology, medicine, and bioengineering, and director of the Emory Center for MR Research at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

Pettigrew is expected to begin his appointment in late August or early September 2002.
