Von Eschenbach, a urologic surgeon, comes to NCI from the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he headed the Genitourinary Cancer Center and the Prostate Cancer Research Program.

Prior to his appointment to NCI, von Eschenbach was the president-elect of the American Cancer Society.

He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington and did his residency training at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. He has served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps.

Von Eschenbach is vice-chairman of the Steering Committee for the National Dialogue on Cancer, of which he was a founding member. He has also served as the chairman of the Prostate Cancer Research Program’s Integration Panel for the Department of Defense.

Von Eschenbach is the twelfth NCI director since the creation of the NCI in 1938. He will take over the position early this month.
