Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Scott Cameron, M.D., joined the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, supported by a 4-year grant from the Children’s Cancer Fund of Dallas.

Cameron, a pediatric oncologist, came to UT Southwestern from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Mass. Cameron’s research focuses on the relationship between programmed cell death and cancer.

Survivor of the Year Named

Nancy Emerson, of Graham, N.C., has been named Cancer Survivor of the Year by Coping magazine. The award is given each year to a cancer survivor who inspires others with their achievements.

Emerson, who is living with breast cancer, helped establish Duke University’s Cancer Patient Support Program for people coping with cancer. She will be featured on the cover of Coping’s January/February 2002 issue.

Four Join Board of Directors

Four scientists recently joined the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation in New York.

David Baltimore, Ph.D., is the president of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif.

Arnold Levine, Ph.D., is the president of the Rockefeller University, New York.

Ronald Levy, M.D., is chief of the Division of Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, Calif.

Gordon Ringold, Ph.D., is chairman and chief executive officer of SurroMed Inc., Mountain View, Calif.

Nominations Being Accepted

The International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements is accepting nominations for the ICRU’s Gray Medal. The medal, honoring the late Louis Harold Gray, is awarded to individuals who have made major contributions to applied and basic radiation science.

Nominations must include a curriculum vitae of the nominee, records or reprints of contributions by the nominee, and letters of support evaluating the contributions.

The Gray Medal will be presented at the 12th International Congress of Radiation Research in Brisbane, Australia in August 2003.
