Awards, Appointments, Announcements

The National Cancer Institute’s Roy S. Wu, M.D., received the Public Service Award of the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation during ASBMT’s President’s Dinner in February in Keystone, Colo. The President’s Dinner was part of the 2001 Tandem BMT Meetings sponsored by the ASBMT and the International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry/Autologous Blood & Marrow Transplant Registry.

Basu Named

Alakananda Basu, Ph.D., has been named associate director for basic research for the Institute for Cancer Research at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.

Basu now serves as an associate professor in the molecular biology and immunology department and as an executive member of the institute at the Health Science Center.

Scientists Honored

The American Cancer Society has designated three scientists as American Cancer Society Research Professors.

They are: Joan Brugge, Ph.D., professor of cell biology at Harvard Medical School; Douglas Hanahan, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry at the University of California at San Francisco; and Leona Samson, Ph.D., professor of toxicology at Harvard School of Public Health.

In addition, the American Cancer Society has renewed the Research Professorships for Inder M. Verma, Ph.D., Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and Michael H. Wigler, Ph.D., of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Each grant is for 5 years and $400,000 and is renewable for one additional 5-year term.

Brattain Appointed

Michael G. Brattain, Ph.D., has been appointed chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, N.Y.

Dr. Michael G. Brattain

 
Brattain was the associate director for basic research at the San Antonio Cancer Institute, and he was a professor of surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Association of Pathologists.

Borrmann Named CEO

Maret Pharmaceuticals, Newport Beach, Calif., has appointed Leonard R. Borrmann, Pharm.D., as president and chief executive officer.

Borrmann was previously the CEO at ACADIA Pharmaceuticals. He also spent 15 years at Allergan Pharmaceuticals.

Maret Pharmaceuticals focuses on the development of peptide products for the treatment of hematopoietic disorders.
