House, Senate Groups Voice Committment to Cancer Research
The House has reorganized its cancer awareness efforts under the House Cancer Working Group. At the moment, co-chairs Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Ohio), Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.), Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.), and Rep. Ken Bentsen (D-Texas) represent the entire membership of the bipartisan group. In a letter to President Bush, the group said it will "work through Congress and, hopefully, with your administration to advance federal policies that further cancer research; improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; and enhance the quality of life of cancer patients."In the Senate, Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) replaces Connie Mack, who retired last year, on the Senate Cancer Coalition. Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) is the other member.
Neither the House group nor the Senate coalition has an operating budget or any policy-making function.
