Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Sir Richard Peto, of the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and Peter Boyle, from the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy, have been awarded the "Knights Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland" for their contributions to public health in that country. The award was presented at a ceremony during the annual meeting of the Polish Foundation for Health Promotion in Warsaw in January. Peto and Boyle have worked closely with Professor Witold Zatonski, who is from the Marie Sklodowska Curie Memorial Cancer Centre, Warsaw, and founder of the Polish Foundation for Health Promotion that for many years concentrated on tobacco control and other aspects of health in Poland.

Professorship Created

Richard Silver, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at Cornell University’s Weill Medical College, New York, was honored with the establishment of the Richard T. Silver Distinguished Professorship of Hematology and Medical Oncology.

The endowed professorship is funded by gifts from the Cancer Research and Treatment Fund totaling $2 million.

Silver’s areas of expertise include the leukemias, polycythemia vera, and other myeloproliferative diseases.

Board Members Named

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has named LaSalle Leffall Jr., M.D., as chair-elect, and Kerry Jacobs as vice chair, of the foundation’s board of directors.

Leffall, who is the Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery at Howard University College of Medicine, has served as president of the American Cancer Society, the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the American College of Surgeons. He will serve 1 year as chair-elect before beginning his 2-year term as chairman in 2002.

In her role as vice chair, Jacobs will represent the foundation at affiliate and other events. Prior to her new appointment, Jacobs was the foundation’s director of affiliate service for 2 years. Between 1995 and 1999, Jacobs was an active volunteer and executive committee member of Komen’s local affiliate in Tarrant County, Texas.

In addition to the appointment of Leffall and Jacobs, foundation board member Connie O’Neill was appointed as treasurer of the Komen Foundation. O’Neill has been involved with the foundation since 1992, serving as treasurer for 2 years previously.

Weininger Appointed

Staci M. Weininger has been appointed director of development for the Lautenberg Research Center for General and Tumor Immunology, of the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School. Weininger will work to raise the visibility of the Lautenberg Research Center to attract donors in North America.

Center Created in Berlin

The Industrial Investment Council and the Freie Universität Berlin have announced the etablishment of the National Foundation for Cancer Research Center in Berlin.

The center, funded by the National Foundation for Cancer Research, Bethesda, Md., will focus on cancer related RNA derived research. The center will be directed by Dr. Volker A. Erdmann, who is chairman of the professional association RiNA, e.v., and is a professor at Freie Universität Berlin.

Clinical Trials Publication Available

The National Cancer Institute is distributing a new publication called Participation of Minorities and Women in Clinical Cancer Research. The publication, which appeared in the November 2000 supplement of the Annals of Epidemiology, is based on two NCI workshops and focuses on identifying best practices for increasing participation of minorities and women in clinical research.
